About the book

For a hundred years the most successful theory in science has refused to say. Quantum mechanics runs every chip, laser and MRI scanner, and it has never failed a test. Physicists still argue about what it says about reality.

The Veiled Box follows that argument from Planck and Bohr to Schrödinger's cat, Bell's theorem and the quantum computers of today. In ink and gold, it sets out the four ways out that physicists have found (many worlds, hidden variables, collapse, and perspective), what each one buys, what each one costs, and the experiments that are closing in on them.

A graphic novel to read twice: once for the story, once for the ideas. With endnotes, glossary and further reading.

The four ways out

The first way out: many worlds. What if nothing ever collapses? (0:23)
The second way out: hidden variables. What if the particle was always somewhere? (0:23)
The third way out: collapse. What if nature itself picks? (0:23)
The fourth way out: perspective. What if it is not in the box, but in you? (0:23)
Cover of The Veiled Box: Reader's Companion

The Reader’s Companion

Every page has a ghost. For every page of the book, the companion gives the same page faded, with a short plain note over each panel and a closing paragraph on why the page matters. No physics needed. Not a textbook, and not a list of questions and answers: a second, slower reading of the same book.

Black and white, 82 pages. Coming soon, alongside the book.

Questions

Do I need to know any physics?

No. The book starts from one question and builds everything else from it. The Reader's Companion explains every page in plain words.

When is it out?

Soon, as a full-colour paperback, with the Reader's Companion beside it. Sign up below and you will get one email when it is.

One email when a new book is out. Between books, now and then a short letter about one thing from the sources: a coin, a map, a passage, an experiment. Never more than once a month.
